Letter to the Editor – Palm Beach Post

The Florida Constitution assigns the duty of drawing congressional districts to the Legislature. In 2010, 63% of Florida’s voters approved Constitutional Amendment 5 which called for Fair Districts. In March, the Florida Supreme Court approved the maps drawn by the Legislature during the recent session based on the latest census.

Even though two-thirds of our state governmental body has done its constitutional duty, now, House Speaker Chris Sprowls and Senate President Wilton Simpson are awaiting maps drawn by Gov. DeSantis, who has no constitutional right to manipulate the districts. To allow him to draw maps that he is willing to approve is a dereliction of duty by Sprowls and Simpson. In November, voters must remember which candidates are “true to their words,” honor their oaths and the people they serve. Clearly, it is not the three listed here.
